Whenever possible, the DataCodes.INFO Project provides complete information about copyright owners and related matters in the project listings along with accompanying texts. The DataCodes.INFO Project does not charge any fees for accessing the data on this site; however, some of the data may be encumbered with fees or limitations that are payable to the data's owner under certain circumstances. The data's owner, not the DataCodes.INFO Project, grants or denies permission to publish or otherwise distribute its data. It is the end-user's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other usage restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the project listings. Transmission or reproduction of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use probably requires the written permission of the copyright owners. Users must make their own assessments of rights in light of their intended use. More information about U.S. copyright law (Title 17 U.S. Code) is provided by the Copyright Office. Other countries have their own policies.

The DataCodes.INFO Project leaders want to hear from any copyright owners who are not properly identified on this Web site so that we may make the necessary corrections.

Data is marked as follows:

Designation Meaning Notes

Original All the data was developed for the DataCodes.INFO Project by various contributors. This data is believed to be original and unencumbered by any outside parties.
Entrusted Data was developed by a 3rd-party and entrusted to the DataCodes.INFO Project for dissemination. The developer of the data has agreed to allow the DataCodes.INFO Project to disseminate the data at no charge to its visitors. There could be some encumbrances for certain usage (like commercial usage), but that will be indicated.
Orig/Embd A mixture of original and embedded data. A large portion of the data was developed for the DataCodes.INFO Project and/or compiled from a variety of public domain sources. It may also contain 3rd-party data that may be encumbered. Import/export tools frequently have this designation.
Embedded The majority of data was developed by a 3rd-party, but may contain incidental data developed for the DataCodes.INFO Project to make it easier to use. Be sure to check for fees and any usage policies the 3rd-party may impose upon their data before using this in your own projects.

Public Data is freely available in the public domain. To the best of the DataCodes.INFO Project's knowledge, the data is part of the public domain and may be used freely and without crediting the source, if the source is even known.
Freeware Data is copyrighted or otherwise encumbered, but you are allowed to use it as you like and without charge. If there are any known exceptions to this general statement, they will be noted near the data.
Open Open source or similar licensing structure. Usage of this type of data varies a bit so be sure to read the licensing agreement. Usually there are no restrictions on not-for-profit or personal usage, but commercial usage may have additional restrictions.
Licensed Some type of restrictive license agreement encumbers this data. Some usage of this data is definitely restricted and may require payment. Be sure to read the license agreement carefully.
Commercial You can look at it for free, but if you use it, you need to pay for it. Very little of this type of data appears on the the DataCodes.INFO Project Web site unless the owner has agreed to make the data available free of charge for reference purposes to the DataCodes.INFO Project's users. There may also be a free trial period or limited functionality demo available.

Designed as a companion data table for the DC_Countries project, the DC_Localities_USC table adds the ability to definatively identify states, provinses, districts, territories, possessions, islands, and military postal destinations within the United States and Canada (thus the "USC" designation). Second level designations (the fancy name for political subdivisions like these) are pretty complex because every country identifies them differently, and many countries use more than one designation for similar types of administrative areas (e.g., Canada's provinces and territories). That is why this table is limited to only US/Canadian localities. Someday we hope to expand this table (or create a new one) that encompasses many more countries. Any volunteers?

Thankfully the US and Canadian postal systems have established unique and very recognizable 2-letter designations for each locality, but there is no easy way to cross-reference that back to the country. Are "ON" and "RI" in Canada or the USA? It's impossible to tell looking at the 2-letter designation, so we have included the DC_Countries' key (DC_Country_Key) in the DC_Localities_USC table (country_fk), and we have created a unique 5-character designation (locality_pk) for each locality that includes either "US" or "CA" in the designation. This way, you can easily tell, without even a database lookup, which country the locality "belongs to." With the locality key, you can easily tell that "CA-ON" and "US-RI" from the previous example belong to Canada and the USA respectively.

We have also included the standard postal abbreviation (abrv) and generally recognized proper name (name) of each locality to help with converting between various data sources. By "generally recognized proper name" we mean "Massachusetts" instead of "Commonwealth of Massachusetts," which is the full formal and legal name of the locality. If there is demand for it we can add in the legal names, too. Or you can add them in and send us a copy! :-)

According to their website:

Freelunch.com is a free service provided by Moody's Economy.com, a leading independent provider of economic, financial, country, and industry research that helps businesses, governments, and professional investors worldwide meet their diverse planning and information needs.

Our databases contain more than 165 million economic, financial, and demographic time series covering more than 180 countries and their sub-regions. Accuracy and timeliness are two of the hallmarks of Moody's Economy.com economic databases. Our dedicated Data Services staff regularly runs data accuracy routines to verify the integrity of our databases. Additionally, with offices in London, Sydney, and the U.S. our staff is able to update our global databases in real-time ensuring up-to-the-minute data.

It should be noted that the site offers premium data for an additional charge. Also, according to the help page "You cannot change the data specifications [including the default time range] on Freelunch.com. However, you can change the elements of how data gets displayed in Moody's Economy.com Research Store." The site does not explicitly state that the data you obtain at no cost is completely unencumbered, but it also doesn't state (at least not that I found) that there are encumbrances.
